Ricardo Villalobos & Maher Daniel - Changes EP (Part 1)

  • The king of minimal links up with a faithful student.

  • Ricardo Villalobos's list of collaborators includes some of dance music's most established artists (Fumiya Tanaka, Max Loderbauer), though he still finds time to work with less familiar names. His latest collaborator is Maher Daniel, a former resident of Montreal's StereoBar. (Back in the day, Daniel actually warmed up for Villalobos at the club.) The pair meet in the studio for the three-part Changes EP, the first of which just landed. Of the two tracks, "Binary Function" has the best groove, a surreal march through a range of wacky textures. The groove gives out a few times, which means it will be tough to play the whole thing—stick with the slick opening five minutes. Villalobos followers won't find much new in either of these 12-minute tracks, but they're solid options for minimal DJs in control of intimate dance floors.
