Dead Man's Chest - Lo-Freq Soul

  • Drum & bass with plenty of soul.

  • "Jungle is low-frequencies... like really heavy bass, exaggerated bass," says the chattering vocal sample in "Lo-Freq Soul," a track that's been a hot commodity in a certain corner of drum & bass for the last year. The sample comes from a recording of an old interview between Fabio and LTJ Bukem, where the two discuss the origins of jungle. Dead Man's Chest uses the sample as a foundation for an appropriately retro banger, built atop a fierce LFO wobble and mean sub-bass. Despite its exaggerated bass, "Lo-Freq Soul" is also spacious. The dusty drums glide through psychedelic synth runs and UK hardcore-inspired chord progressions, and there's a great, sumptuous breakdown. As said by the vocal sample in the second half, this is soul.
