Kuldaboli - Geðveiki Og Brjálæði

  • Sleazy, seedy Icelandic electro.

  • "We want to shed light on music that has been lurking in the shadows of the Reykjavík underground," Thordur Kari, AKA the Sweaty Records artist Kosmodod, told The Reykjavík Grapevine in 2018, "and make it available to both an Icelandic and international audience." Based on the records the label has released over the past few years, "lurking" is a perfect word for it. The collective connected to the label—which also includes artists like ThizOne, Volruptus and Kuldaboli, the producer behind this latest 12-inch—seems attracted to the more shadowy, seedy side of club music. Electro is a favourite sound for Sweaty (think Detroit In Effect more than, say, E.R.P.), but also expect techno, acid and plenty of sci-fi vibes. Kuldaboli's Geðveiki Og Brjálæði ("Mental illness and madness") is a great place to start if you're new to the label. Three of the five tracks are full-blown ass shakers, the kind of pleasure-seeking electro that makes a party a little sloppier. Yes, there is a novelty factor for non-Icelandic speakers in the down-pitched vocals. And yes, these tracks are pretty much content to ape the past. But there is more than enough raw attitude communicated here to win the day, especially in "Sálinni Blæðir Út." The steadier and more reflective "Himnarnir Opnast" harkens all the way back to Kraftwerk, while "Lífið Er Farið Frá Mér" is a moment in dreamy '80s synth pop. Geðveiki Og Brjálæði is more evidence of why you should click "follow" on the Sweaty Records Bandcamp page.
