Carl Stone - Au Jus / The Jugged Hare

  • Poppy, glitchy sample magic.

  • When I saw Carl Stone perform in London a couple of years back, the three pieces he played varied greatly in style but were all underpinned by his trademark manipulation of samples. Sometimes the effect was disorienting, sometimes it was beautiful, and sometimes it was both. Stone's latest EP is reminiscent of his live shows, though in the case of "Au Jus," the US experimental artist has crafted something with more than a passing resemblance to club music. Stone takes the scalpel to what sounds like a pop tune, creating a stuttering groove reminiscent of SebastiAn at his choppiest. The same approach doesn't work on the EP's other song, "The Jugged Hare," whose folky underpinnings become maddening after a few listens. Instead I keep returning to "Au Jus," an addictive bit of sampling alchemy.
