- The Good, the Bad and the Ugly release is a 3 part series on DJ Quest’s Cyberfunk imprint and it unites and highlights the production skills of 3 Cyberfunk artists – DJ Quest, Funkatech head honcho DJ Mutiny and Baobinga. Each part is split into 2 12”s comprised of 4 tunes each. Representing for the Bad (certainly not in production style) is DJ Mutiny.
The Distance
Quickly getting into Mutiny’s trademark breakbeat – you can already tell from the rolling hi-hats, stabby pads and hard hitting (yet not too overbearing) snares – Mutiny couples this with a subtle percussive bongo break (which gets a solo during the breakdown). This then introduces a trance-like synth melody and a dark growling bassline with plenty of variations used.
Complex Man
On a crossover tip Complex Man features a funky housey/electro hook and a hip hop vocal sample both of which get featured heavily in this tune. Mutiny then drops a 4/4 house beat, old skool vocal stabs and a dirty electro bass line to beef up the bottom end.
Let Go
Bringing things back to the breakbeat, track 3 is one for the tear out fans. The introduction features a quirky sci fi melody and a garagey bassline, which after a few build ups, Mutiny subtly morphs into a hard tear out style bass line. To top it all off a deep and highly filtered vocal sample gets added in leaving listeners wondering what the hell it is saying.
Eyes To The Lies
Eyes To The Lies is on a deeper tip than the previous tunes and features a dirty bass line workout. The beat switches from breakbeat to 4 to the floor and incorporates plenty of funky house and electro stabs and a hip hop vocal sample.
