B-Phreak - Chunk Style

  • Fat Records is increasing its artist roster yet again with another new signing, this time from Germany's B-Phreak. Bernie Ott has released tunes on labels such as Carepack, Freakaboom and has another release lined up for Splank!. On remix duties, Fat have enlisted the talents of Merka known for his tear-out anthem "Holding On" on Re:Connect which was selected by The Freestylers for ther Fabriclive CD. Side A. Original Mix On a somewhat ploddy 4-to-the-floor tip, with an offbeat kick to ensure it stays in the realm of breaks, Chunk Style is loaded with a deep monotonic bassline and lots of background noise such as a low key siren, techy synth hooks, vocal stabs and P-Funk snippets. Quite a different sound to what some may expect from Fat but then again they have released similar sounding tunes from Klaus "King Of The Hill". Side B. Merka Remix Merka's remix takes the tune to a deeper level, opening up with a chunkier breakbeat this time with a different shuffle to them and he takes key elements from the original such as the techy synth hooks and vocal stabs and then adds in whistles and ear piercing screeches to the recipe. The breakdown in the middle introduces a long winded bass tone before the true Merka sound appears in the remix with a massive melodic bass line, tribal percussion, bigger sirens. To admit I didn't like this on first listen, but it's a grower.
