DJ Quest - Tripod with Ben Coupland/Solo Run.

  • One of 2-Step/breakbeats newest producers to emerge into the fore has come out with a new platter to make all producers in the genre think differently about beats and production. Tripod with Ben Coupland. The trackname might not be obvious at first but once that syncopated beat hits ya, it's all downhill from there. This is one of the first breaks tracks I have heard done in 6/8 time signature. If you think it sounds wierd then you need to listen to this because it has some great production and DJ Quest and Ben Coupland show off some musicality instead of going the usual 4/4 routine which has been the standard way of making tracks (that is not to say breaks is 4 to the floor, but that the time signature being used is). The bassline in this is absolutely wicked , sort of like a snake writhing around at first then cuts into some triplet stabs - it's like paying a homage to Shimon and Andy C's Body Rock but in 2-step form. This could start up a new genre in breaks - 3-step? or even 6-step?, but before you point the shotguns in my direction for trying to create a new genre, give this track a listen or even better, try beat mixing it with another track. Sadly, as good as this track is, it is probably quite hard to dance to and the only reaction I can foresee at an event is an empty dancefloor. Solo Run Back to the 4/4 time signatures and more of a party break. DJ Quest probably thinks that one genre bending tune is enough for the time being and decided to go for more of a traditional 2-step feel. This tune sounds so old school as the beat is like a hark back to the breaks tunes in the late 80's/early 90's with some of that good old 2002 mentality. Probably taking a page or two out of the Stanton Warriors lecture notes, this is real dancefloor madness, only thing is it feels like a bit of a filler track as it gets a little too repetitive and could definitely be helped out with some samples on top or a bit of variation. Even better, put a wicked acapella on top of this beat and you can turn a good track into one what could be a 2-step/breaks anthem for 2002.
