Tight Rope - Vibrate

  • Hot on the heels of their current release, a collaboration between label head Pete Heller and Darren Price entitled "Amerika", Phela Records serve up another high profile teaming, this time under the guise of Tightrope, who are Pete Heller and Rocky of X-press2 notoriety. Vibrate gets two takes. First off the plate is Mix 1 throbbing from the start with minimal percussive elements on top of a pulsating, acidic bassline which becomes more aggressive as events unfold. Gradually, the pace steps up a notch as wet, clippy rhythms take over, along with distorted stabs creating a sense of anticipation. The subtle workings of the bassline eases things back as cut up scary vocals are added into the mix, dirtying the groove even more. That's not it either as throughout the track, parts get tweaked to head-melting perfection, twisting the mood into something even techier and trippier. Flip it over and there's a Dub mix retaining all the gritty anger of the original but more subdued in its attitude, using muted, warpy synth stabs and catchy percussion over a dark rolling vibe. Intricate workings within the track take shape unnoticed and before you know, it's in full swing, oozing that mind-numbing intension. Both mixes have immense detail and are two standalone tracks put together with a charismatic approach that's going to do serious floor damage.
