Justus Köhncke vs. Prins Thomas - Elan

  • The ‘Elan’ remix is the kind of track that makes your legs feel very tired. You know when its peak time and you really want to dance and the DJ plays something that seems like it might become awesome but never does? This is that track. The bass plods along in that reverentially seventies style and strings interject repetitively but there isn’t any excitement present. Unfortunately enough the ‘Advance’ remix is similarly unthrilling, despite the peachiness of the source material. Prins Thomas makes it sound more ‘live’ and organic, and draws it out into something longer and more progressive. Unfortunately the side effect of this process is to make it dull. Gone is the aggressive punchiness of the bassline and the general perkiness of the original track, which most will remember as the highlight of ‘Immer 2’. Overall this release confirms my suspicion that it’s a bad idea to have artists with similar styles remix one another. Prins Thomas does a decent enough job here, in theory, but in practice adding more disco-isms to an existing disco-y base doesn’t result in much change for the better.
