Frank Hebly - Tuinslangboogie

  • There’s something endearingly eccentric about Magnetron’s latest signing Frank Hebly. His debut is rather oddly titled ‘Tuinslangboogie', which for all you not-so Dutch savvy people out there, has got something to do with the boogie of a garden hose. Of course. Apparently Hebly plays drums, keyboards, guitar and bass, and he boasts that he makes his tracks in a 100% computer-free environment. ‘De Tuinslangboogie’ is a stubborn piece of acidic – yes, you guessed it - boogie. Acid 303 bubbles away slowly, relieved by the occasional burst of energy that’ll make you think the track is about to ignite, but instead the changes come subtly. There’s a bit of brattish teenager to this – try as hard as you like to resist its quirky charm, it’ll embed itself in your mind and simply refuse to go away. On the B-side, ‘Dixie’ could be mistaken as the theme tune to a seventies sitcom. Of course all the characters would be cheerful sorts who, week in week out, would manage to overcome small dilemmas. One week, Dixie would try to become popular to get the attention of the school heartthrob, but she'd find out that popularity isn‘t so important after all and the episode would finish with her hugging the geeky best friend she’d rejected earlier. The show might be pure cheese, and you would never admit that you were an fan, but somehow it gladdens your heart. Such is the track ‘Dixie’. Elsewhere there are two small snippets of retro-funk (‘Bassbal’ and ‘Fasttracker’), but it’s the acid discoism of ‘De Tuinslangboogie’ that’s the winner here.
