Rick Wade - Night Tactics

  • According to their website, Cologne imprint Yore is “a new label focusing on the authentic old school sound in both house and techno. On the label you won't get to hear the same trendy minimal hype sound.” Sounds good, and they’ve got the releases to back it up. Recently they put out the new Terrence Dixon 2x12”, and ‘Night Tactics’ is the second twelve on the label from legendary Michigan radio DJ Rick Wade, who’s been flying the flag for deeper house sounds since the eighties. Wade’s trademarks are warm, funked out melodies and to-die-for chords, and this release continues in the vein, recalling his earlier work on Moods & Grooves. ‘Lo Starts’ is a lazy house track with sweet Rhodes chords coupled with a cosy bass, while ‘Theory of a Varice’ has a Theo Parrish vibe that would blend well with early Detroit classics. On the flip, ‘World of Voice’ has a world music feel, built from an ancient Indian-sounding call and – I kid you not – a didgeridoo, but somehow it ends up pressing all the right buttons. Jacked up, feelgood and dancefloor-friendly house, it's Glenn Underground with a load of spices in his curry pot, if you like. Finally, ‘Vanguard Cinema’ has a shuffle-disco vibe and a nagging guitar riff that might please more cosmic heads. All four of these very different cuts are infused with warmth and soul, and in the right mood with the right people, they'll all be capable of getting the room smiling.
