- Vector Lovers’ brand of exquisitely dreamy electronica is present again on his Simple Records debut, only just pitched up a little. Where the production on his third studio album Afterglow gently cradled you in its arms and cooed reassuringly, ‘Lateshift’ and ‘Babette’ lead you by the hand towards a warm, seductively lit dancefloor and ask you to dance.
At the heart of these two tracks is an overwhelming warmth. ‘Lateshift’, with its grooving deep house chords interlaced with sweeping vocal cuts, is a deep tech bomb, and should be a compulsory warm-up set inclusion for the start of 2008. And while the song itself is quality, it's the background noise that piques the most interest. This strange strangled saxaphone sound is, according to Vector Lovers, "a sample of my kitchen door, which is in serious need of some oil.”
I'm a sucker for an off-time melody or bassline that completely changes once the beats kick in, and Babette has a beauty. Beginning with a funky acid bass that sounds a little dated, it transforms into a bumping deep houser punctuated by keyboard stabs and splashes of bright synth and piano. It's the more up-tempo of the two tracks, and no doubt will see some house club action.
Will Saul has done well to add Vector Lovers to his already impressive artist stable, and with Zabiela, Cattaneo, Ewan Pearson, and Laurent Garnier already playing these two out, ‘Lateshift’ / ‘Babette’ is a pretty good way to kick things off.
