- While Niklas Worgt, AKA Dapayk Solo, did his best to host a variety of different genres and sounds on his latest album, Devil's House, the one thing that came through loudest was his commitment to evil. (No surprise given the album's title.) "A Saw Attacks," "Better Stop Breathing," "Child of the Night"? If there were a prize for the angriest minimal techno record of 2008, it would've easily taken top honors.
"Child of the Night" is the B-side of his latest single from the album, and it starts from the beginning as it means to go on with a warped metallic sound providing a sparring partner to clanking percussion and deep, growling bass sounds. With distorted bells, chords that sound pounded out rather than played and a Karin Dreijer Andersson soundalike repeating the title of the song added on top of all of this, it's hard not to imagine this would be the soundtrack to a rave in hell three years ago.
I say three years ago because well, as we've all heard 648 times in the past year or so, minimal is over. (Riiiight.) Minimal's supposed death doesn't affect "Child of the Night," which sounds potent and timeless regardless of genre. "10 Minutes of Fame," however, which leads off this 12-inch doesn't. Quick and dirty, it's the type of minimal track that's been done to death. If it weren't for the strange blasts of dubbiness that find their way to the fore five minutes into proceedings, there wouldn't be much to recommend at all. It's up to you whether it's worth it, but I'm sticking to the B-side on this one.
