Vince Watson - A Very Different World

  • The thing that first drew me to Vince Watson was his command of rhythm. It was 2001, and the lovely piece of melodic house that did it was the aptly titled "Mystical Rhythm." Later efforts on F Communications had the same effect—and for the same reason—but on the 20th release for his own Bio imprint, it's the melody that gets me. "A Very Different World" clocks in at just under 13 minutes, and has a relentless Radio Slave feel to it, but its injection of melodious tones are the thing that keeps me coming back. That, and the lush two-and-a-half minute ending. Funk D'Void hands the original a nod of approval with his remix. He uses many of the same elements with only subtle changes—and a not-so-subtle breakdown—but it's nonetheless a fantastic rework. The Radio Edit, meanwhile, has a typically warmer feel than the industrious and pounding original but seems to miss the point of what made its predecessor so great, i.e. its extended length gives time for the melody to work its charm time and time again. "Otherworldly" is nowhere as captivating as the title track. It's as if it were added to complete the package, but we didn't need any more convincing: The job was already done with "A Very Different World."
