Disco Nihilist & Daetron Vargas - Untitled EP

  • If one record deserves a review on RA this year, it's this one, and here's why: Texas producer Disco Nihilist tried to send this release to RA no less than three times. On the first two occasions, he mailed it, along with a bundle of other releases, to the magazine's Berlin HQ, and both packages disappeared, possibly slipping into the same grey zone that too many travelling DJs' record boxes end up in. The third time the record travelled a slightly shorter distance and, just to be sure, was hand delivered to me in Dublin by a friend, proving what a small place the world can be. Unsurprisingly, the music, like the method of delivery, is influenced by traditional methods. The first untitled cut could be James Cotton or even Fanon Flowers, the grainy drum shuffle building effectively as Nihilist and Vargas get busy by tweaking a succession of 303 lines. The second A side cut is even more reduced, with the duo delivering a monotonous drum workout. It's a proper DJ tool, and despite its basic construction, exudes dynamism as insidious claps and crashing snares slip in and out of the arrangement. The flip side marks a departure in style as the duo drops a repetitive synth-led techno groove based on a loop of builds and drops. Meanwhile, Vargas flies solo for the finale, delivering a melodic, highly energetic take on Italo, the infectious riffs fuelled by a slap bass line. Ten thousand miles and three journeys later, the great disco adventure ends in ecstatic mode.
