Anton Zap - Take It As It Comes EP

  • Anton Zap's new EP Takes It As It Comes sneaks up on you. On first listen, you'll likely find them to be unassuming deep house. A bit dreamy, well-produced, but nothing all that special. But while repeat listens don't bring it up to the level of his finest work, there is a case to be made for listening just a few more times. Because of their head-in-the-clouds sound—"I'm Fine" is particularly aloof—they work their magic over time. Call it the STL effect, but Anton Zap's tracks get better the longer they are. "Bye," for a start, weaves its spell in a manner akin to the aforementioned Stephan Laubner, dragging a wavering bit of fluffy synth along its length while the percussion changes ever so slightly around it. "Everyday Could Be Like DIZ" does the same, albeit with a more trad-keyboard line in tow. Dub, as much as deep house, is a key influence for Zap, as you can clearly hear on "I Get Deep Beat." His twisting of the gears on that track evokes the still/unstill waters of the genre, where you start your journey in one place and end up in another, wondering how in the world you got there. Zap doesn't travel all that far on Takes It As It Comes, but it's a trip worth taking more than once.
