Pattern Repeat - 00/1

  • The dub techno credentials of Echocord boss Kenneth Christiansen and Dennis Bog, AKA Resoe, are unassailable. The duo have been among Copenhagen's most vocal supporters of the genre over the recent past. Here, as Pattern Repeat, they team up to create a potent two-tracker on their own self-titled label. The results are as you might expect: Dub is the guiding light to both untitled side-long tracks. What distinguishes "A1," however, is its speed and subtlety. The tune clocks in at nearly 130 BPM, making it dubstep compatible for DJs inclined to pitch up. Unlike many of their peers, the duo leave plenty of space in the middle of the track, allowing room for two competing melodic lines to rub up against each other a bit. In a genre where a slavery to form is seemingly expected, it stands out as unique. The B-side is more traditional fare, setting out its billowing smoke early. It shakes a bit more violently than the languid offerings of someone like Echospace, but seems nonetheless to reside contentedly within the genre. It's likely to excite few beyond the purists, and begs the simple question: When you have an infinite set of choices, why go for the easy answer? Considering the A-side, it's clear that Pattern Repeat could do better.
