Baaz - All the Way

  • If you just listened to "Pean for the Masters" from Baaz's All the Way EP for Quintessentials, you'd be forgiven for writing the whole thing off. Modern deep house by the numbers, it's among the least essential tunes you may hear all year, doing exactly what The Masters that the Berlin-based producer obviously admires have done so many times in the past. It's Rick Wade meets Delano Smith. Moodymann without a hint of personality. As the EP goes on, Baaz tries out a few different ideas. "Are You" goes slower and has a tiny little piano line that sounds out of place enough for you to sit up and take notice. "Black Pattern" shows a tiny dub techno influence amid the relentlessly downcast chord progression. "Drive Thru" does the same, and even adds a vocal sample that tells us its "habit forming." Each is better than the last, but the problem with All the Way is that it reveals nothing about its producer. Ask me about what he likes, and I could tell you immediately that Moodymann and Theo Parrish are huge influences. Ask me what makes it special, and I'd have to say, "I have no idea."
