  • In light of Shed's recent complaint about German techno being too rigidly structured, the fifth instalment in the HG series—leaving the small issue of nationality aside—should serve as an example for any electronic music contemplating a career shrouded in techno anonymity. Instead of stomping quantization, the A-side delivers a rolling, shaking groove, its full-blooded design bringing with it a lighter touch and less austere attitude than previous instalments. A snaking, predatory bassline and sassy percussion augment the fatter production, and when the track breaks down, a superbly weighted, seductive synth sequence kicks in. It's the perfect accompaniment to the lithe arrangement, but it raises some questions. After all, we are in limited-edition, hand-stamped territory here, so where are the DBX paeans, Sahko references or at least even a few furrowed-brow nods to Basic Channel? The flip side provides the answer in part, as unrelenting beats provide the basis for a dense, churning rhythm track. However, just when you thought it was safe to go back to the bunker and don the UR hoodie top, the author introduces the kind of moody chords that might appear in a Portable or Keith Worthy track. So there you have it: One of the world's most purist techno imprints has released a deep record. Maybe there's hope for the rigid techno brigade after all.
