Prince Language - I Washed You

  • Most times, DJs are at the vanguard, digging up that damned, leprous and lost music first and championing it. Wherein it gets reissued by labels and heard by open-eared musicians. But in the case of this new 12-inch from New York's Prince Language, he got beaten to the punch by chillwave practitioner Ernest Greene, AKA Washed Out. Greene took Gary Low's neon-bright energetic Italo disco original "I Want You" and screwed it down to around 87 BPM for the dreamy "Feel It All Around," the standout track on his Life of Leisure EP. Now Language serves to return the original to its rightful dance floor velocity, stripping it of its earnest vocals for as long as possible. He highlights the shimmering electric piano spritzes and roto-drum breaks to fine effect on both edits. On the nine minute Frenchkiss mix he namechecks Lil Louis and then around the midway point, Language proceeds to take his foot off the gas, slowing it all down to where it would synch up with Washed Out's version. Honestly, my favorite aspect of these Editions Disco singles lie on the versatility of the flip (be it Doug Lee's "Bamalama" edit or Donald Bumps' slinky Mary Wilson reworking). It's an overt wink from Language, but seeing as how the track served as the lynchpin for his hot Fabric mix this summer, why not let a DJ surf the chillwave for its remaining minute of hype?
