St. Plomb - Precious Soul

  • I've never had an easy time explaining exactly what's so compelling about St. Plomb's music—structurally, rhythmically, what he's doing isn't so far off from a million other newly minted, classically minded deep house tracks. But one listen to "Precious Soul" and you can hear that he's on some other thing, his own thing, from the flickering, buried guitar lead (shades of !!!) to the weirdly (but not disagreeably) dissonant washes of organ and synthesizer and voice. He manages to create something expansive, unpredictable and unusually lyrical without ever losing sight of the rudiments of the groove. Philpot's Michel Baumann turns in two excellent remixes, even if they barely gesture at the original track. As Jackmate, he drips a chromatic descending bassline—nee-ner-nee-ner-HONK—over atonal synth squiggle and flayed hi-hats and ride cymbal, with basso grumbling that tips things over into basement-party madness. As SoulPhiction, he tries a trimmer drum groove and dusky chord stabs, with disco guitar licks adding life to the high end and walking sub-bass adding heft to the low. Formally, it's textbook deep house circa 2010. Functionally, it moves like a hungry python in heat—which is to say, it should get any dance floor jumping. A gorgeous, assured and, above all, sensual track, it's the perfect counterbalance to St. Plomb's more abstracted tendencies.
