Bassfort - Last Night EP

  • Bassfort came onto the scene in 2010 with "Dixtrit," a roller with jerky pianos punctuating a warm undercurrent that came complete with a Jimpster remix which was included in Harri and Dominic's RA podcast. The old joanna is back out in force for the Last Night EP, but instead of a quirky, inventive style, they've gone this time for an old school retrospective. There's a straightforward 909 beat on "Last Night," a heavy piano chord motif, and suspended strings overhead. Freerange's mission statement is to release innovative and soulful music, and with this track Bassfort have got the latter (at the very least) down pretty well. "The Street is My World" is more deep house, but again devoid of anything approaching cutting-edge. Hi-hats shuffle on the offbeat and there are various little rhythmic vocal snippets, underlaid with a smooth, moody humming underneath. Taking this away and adding a fat bassline and more piano chords brings the Piano Mix back towards "Last Night"'s territory. Again, it's good stuff, but with the track not hitting any particular high, whether it would stand out and enthrall particularly on the dance floor is another matter.
