Oleg Poliakov - Comet EP

  • In 2008, RA's Richard Carnes noted Oleg Poliakov's tendency to overproduce. It's now two years later, and things have thankfully calmed down for the Frenchman. The Comet EP sees a return to Circus Company, where he this time opts for a much more stripped-back sound than on previous outings. Opener "Stellar" is the track to keep your eye on here. The dub house sound has obviously found its way onto Poliakov's palette, and he handles it with finesse. The producer's grounding in hip-hop is obvious, resulting in a personable and refined brand of house. Far from getting carried away with layering, though, Poliakov crafts a delectable groove that rides out across the track's duration without the need for any elements other than a few subtle samples. Title track "Comet" sees Poliakov turning his attention towards the bassline for a stomping house excursion. Brass, strings and growling bass all combine to create a dynamic cut that, despite its maximalist makeup, doesn't quite match the personality of the previous effort. "Exoplanet," meanwhile, is all about the percussion, this time paying homage to '90s jungle with a revolving breakbeat that closes out the EP in serene fashion.
