Tom Demac - Swimming in My Mind

  • Tom Demac's newest for Hypercolour has the kind of shimmering glow that typifies the more abstract end of house's recent turn toward the sunshine. "Swimming in My Mind" has a nice, sharply defined, techy groove—simple, almost subliminal organ fills and bright, popping percussion that gives it a mirrored feel. It bumps along without seeming in any hurry, stretching out while staying bright and defined. Dave Aju's remix is full of adept, old-school touches, like the very boxy drum machine and the whorls of organ making up the track's new backdrop—but doesn't overdo the retro tint. TMD's remix goes the opposite direction—darker, dubsteppy—but once it's up to speed it lets a lot of light in, a tonal shift that's gradual and never overbearing. Good B-sides here. "Lose That, Tape This" is sharp, funky, and very jackin'. The emphasis is purely on the low end—a preposterously low-slung bass and wood-cracking drums claim most of the mix's attention—and some gargle-processed hip-hop vocals. "Say You Love Me" gets some nice mileage from some cut-up soul vocal snippets, and his subtlety is appreciated.
