Grayarea - Yewminyst/One for the Road

  • Since their track “One for the Road” first appeared on Sasha’s WMC Essential Mix last spring, the trio Grayarea has become a force to be reckoned with. Following up their highly under-rated track “Asleep at the Wheel”, the Chicago boys are set to release what will undoubtedly be considered one of the best productions of 2003 in the single “Yewminyst.” Complete with Grayarea’s signature growling bass and take-no-prisoners breaks, the tune is one that has found a home in many a DJ’s record boxes, regardless of his or her signature genre. Beginning with rolling 16th notes alongside a thundering break beat, the tune announces itself via a soft piano riff. Then it’s time to get dirty. As the breaks get nastier, layers are added until that over the top bass line enters and all hell breaks loose. The break down features extremely pitched-up guitar strings. The strings repeat and echo as the chilling bass line re-enters and then it’s back to dance floor mayhem. It’s no wonder why this track has destroyed dance floors around the world, as well as the receiving a slot on the now notorious Nick Warren Global Underground-Iceland compilation. Grayarea are on a roll. The flip side offers Gabriel and Dresden’s remix of “One for the Road”. The sheer number of remixes this track has received is in and of itself proof of the production’s greatness. Cranking up the BPM’s, but keeping that low end bass line, the remix is yet another success. Only in the early stages of what is destined to be a long term career, Grayarea have already established their sound. While it will no doubt grow throughout the years, there is something about a Grayarea track that clearly separates them from the rest. As Grayarea prepares to head out on tour this coming April and May, don’t miss what is one of dance music’s hottest and most innovative production teams out there.
