Sydney Young - Lost in Philly

  • The new label project of Ric "Scope" McClelland, Seven Music launches itself with an EP from Sydney Young. It's "a new alias from an already established producer" according to the PR. Whoever lies at the centre of anonymity (I had a fruitless stab at identification), they certainly know how to put together elegant deep house with a nod towards the old school, which narrows the field by no useful degree whatsoever. It's not until after the halfway mark of "Lost in Philly" that you realise just how lovely it is, and how much of an anticipatory affect the narrowly opening filters on the main stabs have created. They're only allowed to break from their deliciously muted barrier a handful of times. Even during the break the steady rise is quickly cut short before any real "moment" can be identified. In its restraint lies its appeal, though, and by the time it's finished you're probably going to want to skip right back to the start. "Dub in Philly" lays on the shimmering, muted Rhodes chords which cascade over a much more prominent bassline, but still retains the laidback vibe of the previous track. Both tracks scream outdoor/beach/terrace party, with the latter just edging it in terms of grin-inducing warmth. Stepping things up a notch, "What's Happening" carries much of its weight below the waist, with a powerful kick/bass combo that bludgeons its way through the centre of the track, percussion and vocals scattered haphazardly in its wake.
