Tuccillo - Mathematics

  • Ibiza resident Tuccillo's music is about as functionally versatile as you'd expect from someone who apparently spends all his time on the decadent island. His debut for house institution 20:20 Vision is proof, three no-frills house genre exercises that are as undeniably effective as they are generic. First up is a slice of filter-happy disco. Like a sunnier, tropical version of Sound Stream, "Without U" centres around a single sampled phrase repeated ad nauseum. Tuccillo divides it up with a terse, breaky instrumental section, and the byproduct bassline is so tense it sounds like it's ready to snap, underlining the blissful track with a hint of darkness. "Password" colours an otherwise monochromatic bongo-driven tech house track with sumptuous chords that hint at shades all across the spectrum, while "Mathematics" plays a quirky horn sample in between large gulfs of metallic tech, supported by surprisingly muscular kicks and snares. Each one of these tracks is nearly flawlessly constructed, and it's a testament to Tuccillo's versatility that each one sounds like it could be the work of a different producer. But maybe that's not such a good thing: as strong as these tracks are, they could have been produced by anyone.
