"You enter a room with an amazing soundsystem, the best DJs and great drinks. You see people immersing themselves in sound, and everyone dances the way they want to. At some point in the night, there are cool moments where you feel the perfect balance between warmth and alertness." This is how Changsie, the DJ behind this week's RA podcast, describes a typical night at Joyride, the party she runs in Tokyo. Sonically, you're likely to hear plenty of UK electronic music at Joyride—Changsie's DJ sets usually include variations on UK garage, dubstep and other bass-heavy sounds. (In a recent interview with Discwoman, she listed Josey Rebelle and Ben UFO among her favourite DJs.)

Her RA Podcast arrives at the beginning of a new chapter for Changsie. In January she'll move from Tokyo to London, where she hopes to start a new life—and a new party. RA.707 suggests she'll fit in nicely with the city's music community: it's a full-blown UKG session, skewed towards the darker end of the genre, with tracks from contemporary outlets like Hypercolour (and affiliated outlet Sneaker Social Club), Lost City Archives and Conducta's Kiwi Records.

What have you been up to recently?

I have just come back from my first tour to the US and Mexico. Played in LA, NYC and Mexico City, and right after that I played some shows in Osaka, Kobe and Tokyo.

How and where was the mix recorded?

I recorded it in my own room.

Can you tell us about the idea behind the mix?

This is a UKG-focused mix, which is the basis of my sound. But it's not a simple back-to-basics attempt. I tried to incorporate what I have learned and developed in the past year through playing, and added new elements in the selection and mix.

Walk us through a typical night at Joyride.

You enter a room with an amazing soundsystem, the best DJs and great drinks. You see people immersing themselves in sound, and everyone dances the way they want to. At some point in the night, there are cool moments where you feel the perfect balance between warmth and alertness.

What DJs and venues, in Tokyo or elsewhere, shaped your style and sound as a DJ?

Open (Shinjuku), Grassroots (Higashi-Koenji) and Forestlimit (Hatagaya) in Tokyo. These are the venues where all kinds of music are played. So every time I'm in these venues, I get inspiration. I feel like they always accept anything I want to experiment with when I DJ too.

What are you up to next?

I’m moving to and will be living in London for the whole year next year. My goal is to start my own party in London while I'm there, and I also hope that I get opportunities to play often in different cities in Europe, too. Before I leave for London, I will play my last gig in Japan, which is an all-night set at WWWß on Friday, January 24th.
