Guy Ornadel Interview
Definately not your average DJ, Guy Ornadel comes across as someone who revels in the good life but could be your neighbour and you wouldn’t even know it. Check the man's DJing tour schedule and it is full of bookings across the globe, yet Ornadel spends his weekdays in the office running Ornadel Management where he looks after the publishing and recording rights of Sasha, Steve Lawler, Sander Kleinenberg and Charlie May.
Over the course of his career in the music industry Ornadel has maneuvered himself into the position where he can indulge his love of djing to crowds around the world, and at the same time use his business skills to look after other artists. On the eve of his Australian tour, Polecat discovers Ornadel is definately not your average DJ when he mentions mid-interview that he likes to cook roasts!
Your tour of Australia is coming up soon. What can we look forward to hearing you play?
Ideally I like to play for four hours or more. Then I'd get to play deeper more progressive tunes into harder and harder music. If it's just two hours then I have to squash it all in. There's lots of great music around right now, so I'm looking forward to the night!
May and June tour dates have you criss-crossing the world. Do you like the traveling DJ lifestyle?
Actually I've had to cut down on my world dates for my commitments to the artists we manage! I do love travelling though. I've been lucky enough to see some amazing countries round the world but at the same time I can assure you there's times when I only see the airport, the hotel and the club! If I had more time I'd like to see more of each country.
How do you feel about the tag of "Superstar DJ" that sometimes gets given to someone like yourself?
Never been into this. I'd be fine tucked away in a booth where no one can see me. I believe it's about the music..!
What motivated you to start Ornadel Management in 1997?
I'd worked for several years in record companies and been involved with other artists careers and decided I had a knack (and a fair bit of knowledge) of what needed to be done to take someone with talent from A to B. So I put my neck on the line and set up on my own. Thankfully things have turned out ok!
How do you keep a grip on the company when you're so busy with DJing
commitments?
Basically I'm always working. Sundays I do like to cook a roast and relax but pretty much every minute in the rest of the week I'm doing emails, sorting out problems or having fun Djing! All I can say is when you're doing something you really enjoy then the hours don't seem to matter. We often work in the week from 9am to 10 or 11pm and then go out all weekend. I've just got used to it now.
How is your mix CD for Black Hole progressing? Will it be released internationally?
Since Sasha's artist album is coming out in August I've put on hold my own mix CD so I get all the work done properly for Sasha. Black Hole have been great about this. I think the CD will be out now in September/October. I know it's going to get released in America so hopefully Australia as well.
Any plans for doing some production this year?
If there were more hours in the day then yes! But there aren't enough right now so no!
What interests you in life besides music and DJing?
RED WINE! Can't wait to go wine shopping in Australia!!!
Guy Ornadel has it sorted; a busy lifestyle he enjoys, a DJing passion he can indulge, and plans for the future. Next step is for you to hear him yourself as he plays his version of progressive and harder trance in Australia in June.
Dates for Guy Ornadel’s Australian tour:
Sydney - Saturday 8 June at Sublime Sub:mission
Melbourne - Sunday 9 June at Slinky.
