Go on Chew the Fat
Beckie sits down with Paul Arnold to talk Fat.
Chew the Fat has gone on the be one of the biggest club nights in London and holds down a monthly residency at the prestigious club, The End. Promoter of Chew the Fat, Paul Arnold has combined the success of the club and his previous experience with managing the proto-jungle record label Certificate 18 to add Fat records to his long list of credentials.
How did you come about establishing your first record label 'Certificate 18'?
Through the Princess Youth Business Trust. An organisation set up by Prince Charles that gives loans and grants to new businesses. It seemed like a good idea at the time.
For those of us who are unaware of the enormity of Chew the Fat parties and Fat records please tell us a little about it's history and what artists you have signed to the label?
The FAT parties have been running for 5 years weekly with pretty much everyone who is any one playing there. Most of whom were playing there before they were names we know and love today.
The main artists on the Label are Friendly from Australia. Apollo Kids, Hedrock valley beats and Daddy.
How have Chew the Fat parties progressed over the past five years?
I think the parties have progressed as much as the music has. So they have got better as there is more and more quality music being released, more variation of sounds and styles. This gives more tools for the deejay so programming the night becomes more important... Before there were just a few deejays playing breaks now there are many more to choose from.
Has the Chew the Fat monthly residency at one of the worlds most respected clubs 'The End' helped the reputation of the Fat record label, if so how?
I think any club night helps a label. The End is a special club so am privileged to be doing a monthly there. I think this has helped Fat label wise and night wise mainly because it is normally thought as a night in Brixton only. Being at the End has moved it into town, so we can lose that stigma of being in Brixton and this makes it more accessible to more people.
Chew the Fat celebrates five years on the scene in May, what do you have planned for this milestone?
We have already held one one off party with The Stanton Warriors, Tayo, James Zabeila, myself, Friendly, daddy Skitz all djing. It was a massive night.
We are also releasing a compilation mixed by myself. This contains tracks from the label which I hope shows the broad selection of different styles played at the club and somehow creates the kind of vibe the night gives off.
How would you best describe your own DJing style and sound?
Mixture of old and new percussive house breakbeat styles with a progressive techno freestyle edge...
Where in the world have you played, where do you look forward to playing in the future?
All over Europe, America and been here now 4 times. I am playing in Mexico in June which I am seriously looking forward to
What advice would you give to young promoters wanting to break free of the mould and create an innovative dance party?
Work your nuts off!
Is there any DJ or producer you haven't had the chance to work with during your career, if so who?
Would love to work with Carl Craig... Superb at both the art of DJing and producing... we're not worthy!!
