That's Petter
It is quite amazing to think that Petter has not yet reached the age of 20. Born just outside of Stockholm, this young producer has been exciting the record boxes of DJ's such as James Holden and Sasha. His debut release, 'These Days', on Deep Records in March of this year was a stunning piece of production, and it was a release that really put the Swede in the limelight. The release particularly caught the attention of James Holden (who proclaimed 'These Days' as one of his all time favourite tracks in the Producer Playpen), so much so that he promptly signed Petter to input his talents into the Border Community stable, the first result being his remix of MFA due out next on the label. Holden's Balance 005 release also featured some upcoming Petter productions, a taste of things to come.
It was time the RA caught up with Petter, to find out more about his influences, and also to see how he views his sudden popularity amongst the DJ fraternity.
This year has been a breakthrough year for your music. Can you describe how this year has been for yourself?
It's been an amazing year to say atleast! I got to release my first record, travel, make new friends & meet lots of interesting people. And the year is not even over yet. But of course there has been ups & downs. There was a short period after 'These Days' was released when I couldn't get anything done at all. But that didn't last very long. I've spent most of this year writing new tracks, and recently some remixes aswell. My back is now completely crooked thanks to all the 8 hour sessions in the studio.
You started producing in your mid teens. What got you into this music at such a young age?
Through the two decent radio shows that we had in Stockholm at that time. I remember recording the shows onto tape and just listen to them for months and months. My favorite tape was one that had Laurent Garnier's Crispy Bacon on it. I still listen to that tape. And of course my dear friend Özgür Can who was in the same school as me at the time. We played music to each other all day long. I think he was the one that inspired me to start writing my own tracks. He and a friend made some fierce techno tracks at the time, tracks I really enjoyed. So I thought, if those two mups can write cool music, then so can I.
Did you find it tough getting your music out there living in Sweden?
To be honest I wouldn't really know. I've never sent a cd to a label. For the one and a half years or so I've known James (Holden), I must have sent him over 100 tracks and clips. He was the one that pushed 'These Days' so it was signed, and it is on his label that I will release my next record on. But in general I don't think it's difficult to get your music out, no matter where you live. If it's good music and you send it to the right label, then they will most likely pick it up.
You are known as a producer but you always DJ. Do you plan to further your DJ’ing or stick to just making music for the moment?
DJ'ing is lots of fun. First time I tried it out was about 3-4 years ago, but I didn't get my first turntables until 1 and half year ago I think. I learned to beatmatch pretty quickly, and since then it has been all about playing around and trying create my own style. I played abroad for the first time last month actually. Quite nervous in the beginning but it turned out pretty good. And to answer the question.. I love both producing and dj'ing, and right now I have all the time in the world to do both.
What’s next for Petter? Can you tell us about your forthcoming material on Border Community?
I have made a quite different remix of The MFA 'The Difference It Makes' which should be out in January next year, along with the amazing original. Also I have recently finished gathering tracks for a 6 track EP on Border Community. It will include the two unreleased tracks from James' Balance cd (Tonediary+All Together) plus 4 new tracks, ranging from proper dub to tech house minimalism.
Out on Deep Records in January aswell is my remix of Rouzbeh Delavari 'Inner Structure'. Aimed at the dancefloor with a _big_ kick drum. Promos are out early December I think. Also, there are plans to release a vocal breakbeat track called 'Cloudnine' on Deep aswell. Currently looking for an appropriate track to put on the flipside..
How was it like having a few productions in one of the mix compilations of the year (James Holden’s Balance 005)?
Nice! Brilliant compilation. Also the only one I own.
It must be beneficial receiving great support from people like James Holden and other big name DJ’s!
When James played after me at Mazzo in Amsterdam last month, he played 6 or so of my new tracks, and I just sat next to him watching the crowd dance to them. That was beneficial for me, not wanking over dj charts that have my records on them.
Can you name some of your favourite productions or mix compilations of all time?
My old friend Djeiran's mixtapes are still high on my list.
And Gus Gus - Vs. T-world is probably one of my absolute favorite cds.
Considering you are still very young, is there anything outside of dance music that you like to do in your spare time?
I'd like to become an archaeologist.
