Winners of the 2004 Breakspoll award for Best Newcomer, The Breakfastaz have clearly made their mark in with a huge spate of releases and remixes for artists such as The Freestylers, Aquasky, Koma & Bones and original tunes for labels such as Quest's Cyberfunk, Broke, Passenger and Mob Records.

Their remix of The Freestylers' "Warrior Charge" (available on the Raw As Fuck Remixed CD) has certainly caught the attention of one Krafty Kuts who has signed their latest single "Midnight" to the label. Breaking the boundaries between heavy rock-edged vocals, electro and warehouse rave, the tune itself has made it onto The Freestylers' recent Fabriclive CD and the single release is presented with remixes from Koma & Bones and J-Majik & Wickaman.

Not just talented in the studio, the boys are known for their crowd rocking skills, hyping up the crowd with their antics as well as their basslines and when they're not playing out they can be heard doing weekly radio shows on BreaksFM, Pyrotechnic Radio, BBC Radio 1 with Annie Nightingale.

The Breakfastaz' Merfie spares a little bit of his time to chat to RA about the crew, the new single and the recent Breakspoll awards.

OK first let's clear one thing up. How do you pronounce the name is it Break-fast-az (brayk-fahst-ahz) or Breakfast-az (brekk-fiss-tuz)?

It's pronounced break-fass-tuz! Does that help? We're not that hot on phonetic spelling! Break as in Breakbeat, Fast as in Faster Pussycat, Kill, Kill and Az as in Uz...

Can you introduce each member of the group and what they contribute to the team?

How did you manage to team up as the Breakfastaz in the first place?

Merf & Gav have been at school together since the age of 9. We all came together to make beautiful music around the age of 14 when you spend most of your time hanging around in groups smoking weed. We got bored of watching tv when we were stoned and so we started making tunes.

Is it true that all three of you were studio engineers working in the studio for different kinds of music eg. house, garage, R&B? If so, would you say that these other styles of music helped shaped the Breakfastaz sound today?

We own a studio along with our life partner Ben Alexander Kohn and we have made all different types of underground and commercial music. We've done R'n'B mixes for some big artists to hip-hop for small UK MCs to House remixes for sexy half-naked Australian soap stars turned one hit popstars. This has defiantly effected our Breaks output as it's taught us loads of studio tricks and it's paid for some of our equipment.

How would you describe the Breakfastaz sound?

Big, Fat & Scary. Always turgid, occasionally cheeky & never half steppin'. Plus as there are three of us were always coming up with new combinations and thus new sounds.

You're starting to get into the vocal led tunes such as "The Pressure" and also on your latest single "Midnight". Are vocal tunes just as easy to write up as instrumental tracks? How do you approach vocalists to write and sing vocals for you?

So far vocal tunes are an extension of the more straight forward tracks; Take the amount of work it takes to do a instrumental or sample based track and add on the vocal writing/production. But this will probably change in the next 6 months as we get into the groove (breaks into madonna)...

What can you say about winning the 2004 Breakspoll award for Best Newcomer? Do you feel that it is well deserved after being edged out by Friendly in last years competition?

Last year we had only released 2 tunes while Friendly had released some stormers, so he definitely deserved the win. Winning this year was cool. Were sure it's got us more work but the best thing about getting the award this year was beating that scum-bag Baobinga, he deserves to be put in his place once in a while.

Any opinions as to who will be next year's recipient of the award?

Rogue Element is definitely in with a chance as are Control-Z but there's still along way to go.

You've also been chosen to mix the first of the Breakspoll CD's to be released on Supercharged. How is it coming along, when can we expect it and what can we expect to hear from it?

We have finished the mix this week and it should be out early September. We have incorporate lots of different styles of breaks and mixed it up proper. So the CD will work at home in the living room, in the car on the way home from work, on the i-pod walking to the bus stop, at any random house party, after the club when your all twisted and no one wants to talk, in the gym while on the treadmill or pumping iron, as a backdrop to raw/dirty sex or passionate love making as well as musical chairs.

Midnight has just been released on Supercharged, featuring remixes from Koma & Bones and J-Majik & Wickaman. It has a rocky sound to it which somewhat stands apart from your earlier tunes. Are we to expect new sounds coming from the B'fastaz crew?

We've got loads of new sounds and directions coming up in the next 6 months as well as shameless cashing in on our successful formulas. Thanks a lot for mentioning our new single MIDNIGHT - OUT NOW IN ALL GOOD RECORD SHOPS NOW ... Sorry about that
