Sonar 2006 Prologues : Isolée

Isolee

Frankfurt's Rajko Müller, known in the electronic world as Isolée, is returning to Sonar in 2006. His critically acclaimed ‘We Are Monster’ album was among last year's finest releases and both his production and live talents are consistently held high. After his virginal performance at the Barcelona festival in 2005 and a busy year overall we spoke to a more chilled out Isolee about his forthcoming expectations.

"The music I mostly play in sunny places
has been produced in rainy weather."

How many times have you been to Sonar?
This year will be the second time.

Do you have a favourite festival memory?
No, I don't. I don't go very often to festivals. I've found it's very difficult to choose between all the artists that are playing at the same time.

For many Europeans, Sonar is the start of summer, does the warmer weather affect your sound at all?
Probably it does, but the music I mostly play in sunny places has been produced in rainy weather.

For people not used to a Spanish lifestyle, a siesta is not part of their usual day. How do you approach the afternoon break?
An afternoon break makes sense to me if you wake up quite early. But I'm the type of guy who is sleeping till 10 or 11:30. So there's no real need for the afternoon break. Maybe it's a good opportunity to see the city.

Sonar is very interested in new frontiers, not just technology but art, music and social trends as well. What do you think have been some of the biggest developments of the last year?
I have no idea. Maybe biological food and alternative energy.

Is there a particular tune you are looking forward to playing at Sonar?
No.

The Sonar programme is always quite diverse and innovative. Who are you looking forward to seeing?
I hope there will be a few surprises, someone I haven't heard so far. Beside this I'm looking forward to hearing artists like Audion, Alva Noto, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Ricardo Villalobos, Herbert...

Around the time of last year's Sonar, 'We Are Monster' was released and hailed as one of the albums of the year. Earlier this year you released 'Western Store', which bridged the gap to some of your earlier work. Are you working on anything at the moment, and can you reveal what kind of direction you are heading in?
I'm happy having finished the album work, especially because of the pressure I had. After this, I'm happy to go on with a few new single releases on Playhouse, maybe focussing more on the dancefloor. Maybe I would like to try something more tracky and abstract, but I never really know what I will end up doing.

Isolée plays at the SonarPub at Sonar by Night on Saturday June 17 at 12:45am.
