Under the gun: Audiofly
RA stalks your favourite DJs and asks them to give up their top ten vinyl secrets. This week Anthony and Luca from Audiofly look down the barrel of the gun.
Audiofly are the DJ/production team of Luca Saporito and Anthony Middleton. The London duo have had releases on Rui da Silva's 64 imprint, Saw, Mobilee and Kickboxer with future cuts destined for new Get Physical offshoot Kindisch and Radio Slave's Rekids output. Fans include Tiefschwarz and RA podcast pick Ewan Pearson who in his latest blog says, "I have been playing an embarassing amount of their music in my sets this year, and when it's all this good who can blame me?"
The pair also have a knack for finding pretty girls to work with in the studio. They record as Sleeper Thief with Miss Jools, as Loose Lips with Scarlett Etienne and as Rekleiner with Stuart Geddes. But Stuart isn't pretty.
Anthony and Luca are a real team. They usually DJ one-on-one off together except for crucial tequila missions to the bar or pit stops at the loo. Next month, they release their debut compilation 'Undulation 2' on Saw which has tracks by Martin Buttrich, Layo & Bushwacka, X-Press 2 and Stephan Bodzin.
RA busted our way into the Audiofly studio. Luca rummaged through their record boxes while Anthony did the talking. They begged us to give them ten minutes extra thinking time so we let them have it, but only because Luca wrote down the names of the records with tricky spelling.

Sebastian Roya - Compression [Connaisseur]
Anthony: "Sebastian's a really talented producer from Tenerife and this is the opening track on our new compilation - we like it that much. It's a track that you can either drop at the beginning of your set or right in the middle and everyone goes wild because of the drums. The original is a real piece of work with a smart and intelligent arrangement. It's highly beat oriented but not to excess. This one has been played to death at almost every one of our gigs recently. It's a very basic track in that it doesn't have any complex melodies. It's all about the beats. The beat is kind of throbbing, pulsing and very infectious. You can dance to it for seven or eight minutes just on the beat which I think is a very good thing."
Beanfield - Tides (Ripperton Remix) [CD-R]
Anthony: "'Tides' is one of our all-time favourite tracks. This was originally remixed by Carl Craig but it's now been remixed by another Connaisseur artist Ripperton. It's moody and deep, one of those must-plays. It's got the vocal which is great to drop into your set. The Carl Craig remix is a classic and that particular track is one of his best efforts. Ripperton has just added his mood to it, as Carl Craig did. The Ripperton mix is great for now as it really fits in with the current techno stuff."
Marc Romboy - Model 1610 (Fairmont Remix) [Systematic]
Anthony: "It's typical Fairmont so very orchestrally melodic but they also pay attention to what's very current. I can't really say much more than that. It's Fairmont who are very distinctive doing an ultra-melodic remix on Systematic, which can do no wrong at the moment."
U & I - Incantation [Freak n Chic]
Anthony: "U & I are Dan Ghenacia and David K. I don't know to describe it. It's an absolute monster. It's got a very twisted acid lineage that grows out of nowhere and then all of a sudden, two minutes into the track, it just becomes accompanied by this amazing live bass. And it's not a straight beat like you're used to, it's really funky but kind of acidy at the same time. We heard it on the Dan Ghenacia vs Jennifer Cardini DJ magazine CD and we just called him straight away and said, 'You've got to give it to us.'"
Zoo Brazil - Paranoia [CD-R]
Anthony: "Zoo Brazil have become very known for their style but on this one they're actually taking it in a new direction. It still sounds like Zoo Brazil but it's very stripped down. It's a little bit more downtempo with very very haunting keys. It's an amazing track, their best in ages. We played it recently at a deserted beach party - deserted except for the party people - and it rocked the flip-flops off one and all!"
Swat Squad - llueveachiaarriba [Gastspiel]
Anthony: "This track is very bass and beat-oriented. It's all about the beat. It doesn't have a big top line or anything like that. It just absolutely funks along. This gets played right in the middle at that point when everyone is expecting a big tune. You just drop this instead and it makes peoples' faces light up because they don't expect it. They expect a big number but then you play this one. It's big by virtue of its beats and its bass. This one has never let us down since we bought it a month ago. We wish there were more tracks like this around."
Dani Casarano - El Zapo Hablo [Connaisseur]
Anthony: "Basically we've got a really good relationship with Alex from Connaisseur. And because we write for Connaisseur and we remix for them as well, we tend to get their stuff very early, a couple of months in advance. We've had this one for some time now. It's got really really tough beats. It starts very tough and then it breaks down into this really haunting melody and then back into a contrasting melody. It's a really good track to play at five a.m. in the morning as the sun is coming up."
Loose Lips - Earsex (Sian Remix) [Tsuba]
Anthony: "This is another one of our monikers that we use. It's basically a collaboration with Scarlett Etienne and I blame her fully for the name! It comes with a Sian remix. How we work together is I do the engineering and basically Luca and Scarlett sit either side of me, poke me in the ribs and provide me with inspiration. Then I bounce ideas off those two. Luca and I have been doing Audiofly for a long time and we've basically found that every time we work with somebody else who's got something credible to say, it tends to just bring out another facet of our creativity. So this is our second release as Loose Lips. The first was on Kickboxer."
Mauro Alpha - Palette (Luca Morris Paul C Remix) [Boxersport]
Anthony: "It's another incredibly beat-driven track with a very interesting spin at the end. When we do our sets we like to kind of fluctuate between long sessions of beats that kind of explode into melodies. We tend to really be into these kind of tracks just because of where you can go afterwards. It's kind of a really stompy filler that can lead you beautifully from one good thing to another."
Martin Buttrich - Full Clip [Planet E]
Anthony: "This is the last track but definitely not the least. In fact it's the most accessible track we've been playing at the moment. It's great because it's kind of taking the values of old house music and injecting really modern technique and production onto it. It's an awesome track. This the kind of track that you would lead into from the one before. We usually DJ one on one off except for tequila breaks and when you play 'Full Clip' you get ten minutes to go to the toilet and get tequila which is great."
