Sunday, 15 June 2008, Berlin, Germany
It's a no-brainer picking #1 this week as some of techno's top (sea) dogs get together for an afternoon of open-air mayhem, complete with Treasure Island-style theme. The lineup includes (deep breath) Richie Hawtin, Josh Wink, Matthew Dear (and his band), Luciano, Tobi Neumann, Steve Bug, Loco Dice, Troy Pierce, Magda, Marc Houle, Heartthrob, Konrad Black, Guido Schneider, the list goes on... all celebrating the German capital city as a big family. RA talked to acid buccaneer and Ovum Records head Josh Wink.
How do you usually spend your Sunday? I think this one's going to be a little different.
Usually my Sunday afternoons are spent 37, 000 feet high on a plane heading home from a gig.
What would be your perfect Sunday afternoon?
A perfect Sunday would be away from an airport in a park having a picnic and getting my feet rubbed by my lady.
So there's a pirate theme for this party. Are you going to dress up?
If anything, I think I'll just have a parrot on my shoulder and a shovel because they said that I'm getting paid for the night but it's somewhere in the ground. I'm going to have to dig everywhere for it.
Where's the best place to find a stuffed parrot in Berlin?
Actually, I'm going to get my parrot in Rimini, where I'll be playing that morning,
Do you know any good pirate jokes?
Let's see... A pirate walks into a bar with a steering wheel half way out of his pants, and the bartender says, “Hey, pirate, do you know you got a steering wheel coming out of your pants?”. And he says, “arrr... it's driving me nuts”.
Ha ha. Let's say that all the artists are actually the motley crew of the Jolly Roger. Who would be your peg-legged, grizzled and one-eyed cap'n?
Well, I guess Rich cos he got the crew together. He is the Cap'n of the HMS Pinafore, right?
Who would be his loyal first mate?
I guess Troy because they look alike now that Richie has a beard.
Who would be the ship's lookout, perched atop the mast?
Marco Carola because he's always looking out for women.
And who would be the cook serving putrid, salty stew every day?
That would be me though I'd be cooking organic, vegetarian, locally grown, vegan dishes. Everything with lime sauce so the scurvy wouldn't run rampant.
Who would be Roger the Cabin Boy, and why?
Steve Bug because he's a neat freak.
What type of pirate would you be, and what would be your name?
I would be 'One Tooth Winky'. Cause I had a tooth knocked out.
Arr. Where be the buried treasure?
In me pants. Go ahead and find it, landlubber. That would be my pick up line for the ladies.
Friday, 13 June 2008, Paris, France
Three disconauts beam down to the Bataclan, a fruity old Chinese-style theatre in Paris that's the perfect setting for their fun, free-thinking and spaced-out styles. Expect psychedelic disco from Prins Thomas, discofied house from Tim Sweeney and vibrant electro from fellow Noo Yawker Shit Robot. A bit like Midnight Cowboy for the 21st century.
Inner city pick: Galerie Patrick Seguin just off Place de la Bastille showcases cool 20th century interior design and furniture art.
Friday/Saturday, 13-14 June 2008, Berlin, Germany
Berlin's well known for being a city where you can stay out all weekend, but Spanish festival Electrosplash makes it even easier this week with a non-stop club-hopping spree happening at Watergate, Arena and the Badeschiff, a swimming pool anchored in the River Spree. For those that can go the distance, there's deep minimal (Matthias Tanzmann, Tom Clark), poppier techno (Sascha Funke, Imek), party tech house (M.A.N.D.Y., Tiefschwarz) as well as more technical minimal (Mike Shannon, Pier Bucci). And then what? Make your way to the number one pick.
Inner city pick: You'll probably have regressed to a childlike state after this, so go to Big Brobot on Kopernikerstrasse for cool toys, magazines, stickers, urban art and streetwear.
Friday, 13th June 2008, London, England
A live electro orgy ce soir as FabricLIVE steers away from the deebee and breaks that typically rule their Friday nights. Europe’s hottest electro bass act Modeselektor play live joined by The Count and Sinden's tongue-in-cheek, urban-style mashup with Boys Noize, D.I.M., Shadowdancer and Housemeister representing Boys Noize Records in similar style in room two. Not for the faint-hearted.
Inner city pick: Walthamstow dogs is kind of like Ascot, but smaller, less posh and much cheaper; great fun for a bunch of mates.
Saturday, 14th June 2008, Amsterdam, Netherlands
The last event at this warehouse-style space celebrates Berlin’s reigning techno scene. Konrad Black headlines with dark, groovy minimal that’ll keep things moving solidly after Serafin’s synthy atmospherics and Soundstream's live set of deep disco house. And when it's all over, move to Berlin like everyone else.
Inner city pick: Why not visit the nearby Science Museum on your way home and baffle yourself.
Saturday, 14 June 2008, Portrush, Northern Ireland
Don't expect a balmy evening of Balearic charm at this car-park-cum-beach party in Northern Ireland, but do expect stadium dance acts of the highest order with The Chemical Brothers backed up by Utah Saints, Fedde Le Grand, Steve Angello and Eric Prydz on a big ol’ stage with lasers and the usual retina-zapping light show.
Inner city pick: You know that Led Zep ‘Houses of the Holy’ album cover? The Giant’s Causeway where it was taken is just along the coast.
Saturday, 14 June 2008, Hamburg, Germany
Many happy returns this week for DIY, the monthly event programmed by hot Hamburg house label Diynamic at the converted WWII bunker of Uebel und Gefahrlich. Solomun and H.O.S.H. will spin deep, orchestra-infused house accompanied by Martin Buttrich live and a DJ set of driving minimal from Loco Dice. Unconfirmed rumour has it that it’s actually just Buttrich playing two sets with Dice sitting on a couch telling him what to do for one of them.
Inner city pick: 4Experiment Gastraum mixes rock and roll with cuisine, set up by 4 chefs with a ‘band’ ethos (“Fuck convenience food!” no less).
Saturday, 14th June 2008, London, England
Flying Lotus celebrates the launch of his new Los Angeles elpee in style at a giant BBQ in a Shoreditch car park. Besides his crazy, mashed-up Warp-esque hip hop, there'll also be laidback street beats from Samiyam, Ras G and Jose James. Dub pressure comes from the likes of Digital Mystikz, Kode9, Rustie and Hudson Mohawke. Oh, and you get a free CD on the door. How nice.
Inner city pick: City beach club is a beach bar in the middle of the city, halfway up Brick Lane; the idea may be old hat but it’s still cool on a hot day.
Sunday, 15 June 2008, Ibiza, Spain
It’s opening party season in Ibiza, and this means a) unholy lineups like this one and b) equally ridiculous queues and guaranteed dancefloor crush. Along with the unmatched over-the-topness of it all, there’ll be party-centric styles from mashup electro(2ManyDJs, Felix Da Housecat, Riton) and house (DJ Pierre, Ben Watt) to breaks (Chew The Fat!). We may love Sundays but we probably won’t Love Monday as much at all.
Inner city pick: PK2 off the road from Jesus to Talamanca, a “well-kept secret” bar with good, simple food and ambient music on an unspoilt beach.
Sunday, 15 June 2008, Lido di Jesolo, Italy
The Italians celebrate the full moon this month with a massive beach party. Main stage DJs such as SebastiAn, Busy P and DJ Mehdi will be playing in a mechanical arm 15 metres above the ground. Gulp. Blog housers Crookers and maximal electro starlets Surkin and The Bloody Beetroots complete the ultra-noisy lineup. Watch out for werewolves.
Inner city pick: Rather than traveling 25 minutes down the road to Venice, you might feel more like going on a diving trip the day after in the Adriatic sea. Try Blue Sport Jesolo or L’Aquanauta Dive Center.
