The Breaks sound has taken Sydney by storm and one of it’s major players is that of Kid Kenobi. With his weekly residency at Home’s Sublime and equal success with the recent release of Ministry of Sounds “Clubbers Guide to Breaks” R.A reporter Beckie decided it was about time we asked the Kid just how he does it.

Firstly congratulations on receiving nominations for Best DJ N.S.W and Nationally for the second year running at this years DMA's . Did you expect this again after last years success?
- No not at all!

Your involvement in the industry has had a strong influence on the success of the breaks sound in Sydney. This is quite an achievement. What direction do you think breaks will take next?
- I think its easy to say what will 'breaks' do next but really the question is: 'what will music do next'. The great thing about electronic music is that, at its core, it's
always been about discovering 'new sounds' and pushing 'new boundaries' [I'd like to think so anyway]. In some ways music in general has always been about this. This can be done by borrowing from other styles, through things such as new technologies, studio tricks, and unique innovations on behalf of the producers. Such things will see [electronic] music continuing to take things in new directions. At some level breaks will be a part of this evolution. In breaks, you continually see producers like Darqwan [Oris Jay] taking influences from differing genres [in Darqwans case garage and breaks] to form totally new and unique hybrid sounds. It's not necessarily about taking 'a' direction, rather it's often about the very act of 'experimentation' itself. That's the future as far as I see it.

How has the new Ministry of Sound compilation differed from your first instalment?
- Well, its less of an 'introduction' to the breakbeat sound and more of an exploration of the differing styles, vibes, and textures that exist within the genre. I also managed my time a lot better and the chill CD is basically the CD I've always wanted to do!

Due to your association with Ministry of Sound it has seen you travel the country, most recently with the Annual Tour with the likes of Ferry Corsten and Tall Paul, would you say that cities such as Perth and Melbourne are into Breaks as much as Sydney?
- For sure. I haven't had a chance to play a 'breaks specific' night in Perth yet unfortunately. I have in Melbourne and it's always great. I think the great thing about touring is the chance to experience smaller / regional places like Hobart or Cairns and realise that they have incredibly vibrant scenes and talented DJ's devoid of the cynicism you often encounter in the 'bigger' cities which is rather refreshing.

You have recently completed work with Pocket and Ken Cloud on reworking Green Velvet's La La Land, defiantly one of the years biggest tracks. How did that all come about?
- Well basically Hussle had the rights to OZ release and they thought it would be a good idea to get a breaks mix done. I'd been trying to write some breaks with Pocket, Hussle heard about this, and asked us to see what we could come up with. That's the logistics. In the end it was a three day studio affair that just seemed to roll creatively from start to finish. It was a great experience.

Is there more work install for the future with the pair?
- Yeah for sure but between us all there isn't all that much time to spare. Pocket and Ken are flat out but we're really keen to give it another go. I'm really looking forward to it when the time finally arrives.

With your increase of work in the studio have you thought about producing any tracks yourself?
- Yeah I am. But as the ever-wise Pocket suggest; learning to write music really is a matter of getting some miles behind you. I've started walking but I've still got a long way to go! At the moment I'm just trying to hang out with as many people who are writing music as possible.

Field Day this year is going to be one of the biggest events this coming new years, it must be amazing to be supporting such an incredible international line up?
- Ha yeah it is. The local line up will also rock I'm sure.

You recently travelled over to the UK, what did you get up to over there?
- Right, here it is in a nutshell. It was a mixture of gigs [Chew the Fat in London, Supercharged with Krafty Kuts Brighton, 2 Funk with the Phantom Beats and Plastic Raygun crew Cardiff, and New York with the Kingsize USA crew] and studio time [Ed Solo in Brighton, Phantom Beats in Cardiff, Johan and Sticsh - from Sound of Habib Records - in Sweden, and the Kingsize crew in New York]. It was good fun and a great learning curve.

Lastly what would be your perfect way to celebrate new years eve?
- Beloved family, close friends, good music, and a big rockn' house party by the beach.
