The story of how Dekmantel reached this point is well-documented. Its core members, Thomas Martojo and Casper Tielrooij, started throwing parties around 2007. Two years later they launched a record label, and the festival followed in 2013. These offerings have expanded and evolved with each passing year. Together with Matthijs Theben Terville, Martojo and Tielrooij now oversee three festivals—in addition to Dekmantel Festival they run the more low-key Lente Kabinet in Amsterdam, and Selectors will begin in Croatia on September 1st. The main label is in rude health, and there's a new techno-focused sub-label called UFO as well as a compilation series linked to the crate-digging ethos of Selectors. All of this leaves you wondering what the crew has in store for their tenth anniversary next year.
Following our Home Listening sessions with Bicep and Lena Willikens, we asked Martojo and Tielrooij to host an intimate gathering at Tielrooij's house in Amsterdam. Their session, which took place a couple of months before this year's Dekmantel Festival, was attended by a small group of friends, including Dutch producers Guy Blanken (Makam), Yuri Boselie (Cinnaman) and Olf Van Elden (Interstellar Funk).
The duo began with a record from The Hague, I-F's "Casablanca Sunrise," and what followed revealed that Martojo and Tielrooij's individual tastes are different yet complementary. Over the course of two hours we heard stoner psych, early electronic experiments from Tom Dissevelt, Italian synth wave, classic Autechre, Chicago house, Nigerian boogie, Japanese synth pop, forthcoming music on Dekmantel and one track that Tielrooij describes as "one of the best African tunes I've bought in my life."

The Dekmantel listening session took place in Tielrooij's living room, where there's a small E&S rotary mixer, a couple of turntables and stacks of records he's picked up on his travels. Those in attendance came around early in the evening for dinner before Tielrooij and Martojo began selecting the music.
