It's going to be another Subliminal summer in Europe, with Erick Morillo's season having just kicked off,co-inciding with the release of his Subliminal Sessions 5 mix album. And with his own solo album not too far off, things have reached an exciting stage for the Colombian. RA managed to track him down in Spain for a lightning interview...

The cover of your disc is graffitied with the 'Taking It Back' legend. Does this explain your thinking behind both mixes?

No, it was put together a little differently from your average compilation. I wanted to include tunes I was playing when I first started to DJ, like 'Relight My Fire' and 'French Kiss'. It's good for people who've just come on to the scene to hear these classics in their original form. It was a bit of a challenge, none of the other DJs are doing anything like this.

Fair to say the second mix is very druggy?

Well it's all a little druggy! It's all groovy for me, and just feels good when you hear it.

You've included two Robbie Rivera tracks, so presumably he's doing it for you at the moment?

He's a very talented young producer, and I'm a firm admirer of his. He puts out way too many tracks though!

You've worked with Jessica Eve a couple of times now, most notably on the 'Dancin'' track. What's her appeal as a vocalist?

She's awesome. We were in the studio and wanted to do something a little different, and her voice fits 'Dancin'' perfectly. It's reminiscent of an old Cajmere track, the lyrics 'you called me' and 'why were you not there'. Apart from anything though she's a really good friend and Harry's wife!

Your new album's been promised for a while. Is it ready to go?

Yeah, I've been having a lot of fun with it, and it's due in January/February. The first single with the Audio Bullys is out in September, then the album. There's a few guest appearances but I'm not gonna tell you who! Jessica and Harry will be on there though.

You presented some short TV shows for Channel 4 in the UK. Any plans to do more?

No, while that was a good experience I'll be just sticking to my peers on that one.

Ibiza's open for business now - best night so far?

Ooh, way too early to choose. The opening night was great, and Subliminal are looking forward to the nights over the summer with the likes of Deep Dish, DJ Rap, Jacques Lu Cont, Who Da Funk and all. It's gonna be hot!
