  • Damian Lazarus has announced details of his forthcoming debut artist album, Smoke the Monster Out. Set to be released in May, the wide-ranging longplayer will be a bit of a left turn for the producer, who has made his name as the head of dance floor-oriented Crosstown Rebels imprint. Instead of the usual collection of dance singles, Lazarus asked Arthur Jeffes—son of the Penguin Cafe Orchestra's Simon Jeffes—and Classic Records boss Luke Solomon to help him construct songs that feature his own vocals, as well as the vocals of the twin sisters that make up Swedish indie duo Taxi Taxi. The result is the culmination of two years of work. Says Lazarus, "I found myself starting to write lyrics and compiling a soundtrack which would form the basis of the project...I pieced together some of my older influences (Louis Armstrong, Jeff Buckley, Nick Cave, Photek, Björk), connected them with odd sounds and comedy moments and then tried to put this all into a techno/house context." As the recently reviewed single, "Moment," proves, it should be an interesting listen to say the least. Get Physical Music will release Damian Lazarus' Smoke the Monster Out on May 6.
