  • Squarepusher is set to release a live album later this year. The English producer, real name Tom Jenkinson, has been on the forefront of the electronic since the mid-90's with his fusion of drum'n'bass, acid, jazz and UK garage, but has received an equal amount of plaudits for his idiosyncratic live shows. Even during his DJ sets he often appears with his bass guitar to add an extra edge to his performance, and even had Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea call him the "best electric bass player on the earth" after witnessing Jenkinson play at the Royal Festival Hall's Jimi Hendrix tribute concert in London last year. Entitled Solo Electric Bass 1, the album consists of a recording taken from one of his solo bass performances at Paris' Cité de la Musique in 2007, which was one of the dates of a small European tour focusing solely on Jenkinson's manipulation of the instrument. Each performance consisted only of Jenkinson on stage with a bass and small amplifier, and this particular recording was taken straight to tape with no post production or editing. Just how many copies of this release will be pressed is unclear, but Warp have announced that this will be a limited run that will not be repressed. Warp Records will release Solo Electric Bass 1 on August 17th, 2009.
