The Melbourne-raised Icelander will release his third album of industrial ambience later this year.
Back in June at Sonar festival, our very own Todd L. Burns came across Ben Frost's live show, commenting that "Frost's awe-inspiring and ear-drum rattling compositions" were the "most visceral show of the festival." While Ben's music has been lumped into the experimental and ambient box occupied by producers such as Fennesz, his use of rough and arresting sounds mark him out as an artist whose music isn't for the faint of heart.
His 2007 album, Theory Of Machines, garnered critical acclaim from publications such as Wire, and his latest effort—entitled By The Throat—expands on the same sound, albeit with a bigger supporting cast. The Arcade Fire's Jeremy Gara contributes his drumming talents, while multi-instrumental quartet Amiina (who offer live and studio accompaniment to Sigur Ros) also appear. Frost's love of sluggish doom metal comes across via a collaboration with Swedish metal outfit Crowpath, with acclaimed young composer Nico Muhly rounding off the assembled cast of musicians.
