- The two avant-garde groups will release a collaborative LP this summer.
Baltimorean experimental duo Matmos have teamed up with modern classical outfit So Percussion for a new album called Treasure State, due for release this summer on Cantaloupe Music.
While Matmos are known for their strangely sourced samples and prodding style of electronic music, So Percussion are a Brooklyn-based quartet who specialize in the work of modern composers like Steve Reich and Paul Lansky. On Treasure State, the collective chooses an unusual array of source materials, including "ceramic planters, pails of water, aluminum beer cans and cactus needles"—quite tame for Matmos, who once made a track using lasers, a theremin and snails, but unconventional nonetheless. The album was edited by Matmos's M.C. Schmidt and San Francisco-based "plunderphonicist" Wobbly, and mixed by frequent So Percussion collaborator Lawson White.
