- The young Chicagoan's first full-length showcases the sound of footwork tracks.
London-based label Planet Mu is set to release the first full-length by DJ Nate, a 20-year-old producer at the center of Chicago's footwork scene.
In short, footwork is a heavily syncopated form of dance music with roots in both hip-hop and ghetto house, especially from the label Dance Mania. It goes hand in hand with a jittery style of dance called footwurkin, or juke dancing. The phenomenon was hardly known outside of Chicago until recently, but thanks mostly to YouTube and Planet Mu, it now has a cult following in the US and and the UK. It even got a mention in The Guardian recently, when music journalist Paul Lester included DJ Nate in his new band of the day series.
By collecting 25 of Nate's footwork tracks, Da Trak Genious provides a formidable introduction to this burgeoning new genre. It will be preceded by an EP, Hatas Our Motivation, due out next week on Planet Mu.
