  • James T. Cotton will release his next album, Creep Acid, this April under the name JTC. Cotton, real name Tadd Mullinix, is a Michigan-based producer with a varied musical history. Early in his career he made futuristic hip-hop beats as Dabrye, most of which came out on Ghostly International and Spectral Sound. Dabrye's albums and 12-inches featured collaborations with MCs like MF Doom and Madlib, and once or twice with beloved producer Jay Dee (or J-Dilla). Around the same time, Mullinix started making acid house tracks as James T. Cotton, and later with his roommate D'Marc Cantu as 2 AM/FM. According to Mullinix, having and not having the machines he wanted has been a defining influence in his music. After selling his Micro-Moog as a teenager to fund some car repairs, he worked with software for years, and though he enjoyed the process, he longed for a set of analog gear. "I wanted to make sounds with subtle sonic variation," he says. "I wanted to write tracks with multiple phasing phrases, and to improvise." "I started to accumulate some machines that I've always wanted; a TR-909, a TB-303, and an SH-101 that I picked up during a tour in Tokyo. I assembled my studio in an apartment that I shared with D'marc Cantu in Ypsilanti, Michigan. Since I wanted to convey a live, improvised feel, I wasn't programming pattern sequences or writing songs with distinct parts." It's those years living with Cantu, which Mullinix refers to as his "college days," that gave rise to Creep Acid, an album that was originally due out in 2009 but will first see the light of day in April. "I was making music in a haze of smoke. I was indulgent and pleased. Acid house is what drove me to these machines, but once I got there I was only thinking about enjoying the fruits of improvisation and crude techniques." Creep Acid will be the second full-length on Nation, following the 2009 LP Faith by label head Traxx. Tracklist 01. Creep Syringe Diffuses Malignant Aggression 02. 8163264 to the Edge of Panic 03.
