  • The Windy City will get a heavy dose of techno on Saturday, June 11th when Function and Peter Van Hoesen headline an Oktave party at Smart Bar. As Function, David Sumner has been in the scene for more than 15 years, beginning in his native New York before making the move to Berlin. The past few years has seen him focus on Sandwell District, the label and collective he operates with Regis and Silent Servant. Late last year the outfit released its much-anticipated full-length, which exemplified their trademark style of angular rhythms and vivid atmospheres. Van Hoesen shares Function's deep and dark take on techno. He's developed into a prolific producer over the past five years, while becoming a favorite at techno clubs around Europe and at Japan's Labyrinth festival. Born and living in Belgium, he runs his own Time To Express imprint, which just released its first compilation after three years in business. He's also known for occasionally working with Italy's deep techno guru Donato Dozzy, most recently on the well-received track "Elektra." It will be the first Chicago appearance for both artists; Function will be playing a live/DJ set while Van Hoesen will take to the decks. The night begins with a set from Oktave resident DJ and Perc Trax artist Jeff Derringer.
