- Gemmy's label will release a retrospective of Bristol's "purple" dubstep sound featuring Joker and Guido.
A new compilation called Purple Legacy: A History of Purple WOW will be released on June 25th.
The term "purple wow" first emerged in 2008 to refer to the "purple trinity" in Bristol, namely Gemmy, Joker and Guido, as profiled in a 2009 RA feature by Richard Carnes. These producers had a melodic, g-funk-flavoured take on dubstep, especially in tracks like Guido's "Orchestral Lab" and Joker's "Tron."
Gemmy founded his own imprint World of Wonders last year, and it's through that label that he'll compile and release the Purple Legacy compilation, a five-year retrospective chronicling the best of the purple sound. The collection is made up of previously released tracks from labels like Punch Drunk, Planet Mu, Kapsize, and Tectonic, with additional appearances from Ginz, L-Wiz and others extending beyond the core "purple trinity." The CD will come with a download code for an exclusive mix by Gemmy.
