Pioneer has released details of the CDJ-2000nexus, their latest update of the industry-standard club CD player.
While the major innovation of the CDJ-2000 was its compatibility with USB sticks and memory cards, the centerpiece of this update is the deck's ability to interface with mobile devices. A new iOS- and Android-compatible version of rekordbox, Pioneer's music organization and analysis software, will allow music stored on smartphones and tablets to be played on decks when connected to the shared wireless network.
The CDJ-2000nexus also features a number of new performance tools. When connecting multiple decks via a LAN cable, DJs can designate a master deck, which sets the tempo across all connected decks and allows for automatic, universal beat-matching. Similarly, Slip Mode allows DJs to make on-the-fly edits without losing their place within the original track's time and tempo. A new "traffic light" system in rekordbox and on the deck's browser screen (the same full-color, 6.1-inch screen from the last update) provides suggestions about which tracks are in key with the one that's currently playing. Pioneer has also tweaked its tempo-shifting algorithm to enable artifact-free, pitch-stable changes in tempo up to ±16%.
