- The UK artist will perform three works at the 2013 Metropolis New Music Festival next month.
Matthew Herbert will visit Australia for the first time since 2005, performing once in Sydney and three times at Melbourne's Metropolis New Music Festival this April.
Although his recorded output has slowed in recent years, the past six months have seen the reissue of the UK artist's seminal '01 album Bodily Functions, followed by the digital release of Herbert Complete, a 130-track collection of his output as Herbert. While these works revisit some of his more house-related productions, his Australian performances will showcase his experimental compositions. The first of his Melbourne shows will take place on April 8th at the Melbourne Recital Centre. The Made of Music event is a concept commissioned by the Metropolis Festival in which Herbert will use and manipulate the theatre's hoop pine interior to create a musical experience out of the space itself. His second performance on April 12th, called The End of Silence, will be constructed around a ten-second audio clip of American photographer Sebastien Meyer under fire from a war plane in Lybia, while the third show on the 13th will be based on Herbert's controversial One Pig album, in which he relates the story of a pig's journey from sty to fry-pan through music, with a local chef cooking live on stage. Sydney will also be able to enjoy the One Pig experience on April 10th at The Standard.
Experimental Warp Records artist Mira Calix will also be performing at the Melbourne festival, with pieces for electronics and ensemble being played on two consecutive nights, April 19th and 20th, at the Melbourne Recital Hall.
