  • Native Instruments has announced a new software instrument called Drum Lab. The plug-in lets you craft hybrid drum hits—a technique valued by producers for creating punchy and highly individualized sounds—from a wealth of sources. Drum Lab contains an acoustic layer with 38 drum sounds, recordings of which were made in three different rooms and captured on a tape machine. The electronic layer contains 380 drum hits sampled from all sorts of drum machines. According to NI, these have all been "phase aligned, faded, and pitched to perfectly blend with the acoustic samples." You can tweak the sounds you make with on-board EQ, compression and convolution reverb. An extensive groove library, with MIDI drum patterns derived from performances by professional drummers, also comes with the package. Drum Lab is now downloadable from Native Instruments for $99.
