- Rabih Beaini's label will chart the synth composer's work in a three-part vinyl series.
Morphine Records will release a series of records to celebrate the career of experimental jazz and synth musician Charles Cohen.
Speaking to RA, Morphine chief Rabih Beaini (AKA Morphosis) said he originally contacted Cohen to enquire about repressing "Dance Of The Spiritcatchers," which was first released in 1980 on Zero Records. "Later, he ended up ripping his older reels and came out with all this material," Beaini says. "Dance Of The Spiritcatchers" was recently the subject of two reworks by Morphosis, which were released on a 12-inch last month.
As Juno Plus report, the first part of the three-part series, The Middle Distance, focuses on the Philadelphia musician's compositions from 1979 through '88. The second part, Group Motion, features two live recordings from 1989 of Cohen's more drone and jazz-influenced work, while the final part, Music For Dance And Theater, is a double-vinyl package with 11 tracks made for dance and theatre productions between 1976 and '88.
Morphine will also release a double-CD compilation that pulls together all of the tracks from the three records, in addition to two bonus cuts. Some of the music featured in the series will be included in a documentary on Cohen that is in the works. The releases will kick off a busy few months at Morphine HQ: Beaini revealed the label has a new three-track EP from Madteo on the way, as well as a 12-inch from LACK.
